Nephrology expert, family nurse practitioner, speech-language pathologist join UMMC faculty
Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.
Neville R. Dossabhoy, M.D.
Dr. Neville R. Dossabhoy, professor of medicine at the Louisiana State University Health School of Medicine at Shreveport and chief of the nephrology section at Overton Brooks VA Medical Center, Shreveport, has joined the Medical Center faculty as a professor of medicine.
After receiving his medical degree from the Aga Khan University Medical College, Karachi, Pakistan, in 1990, Dossabhoy undertook a rotating internship from 1991-92 at the Aga Khan University Medical Center. He then completed his internal medicine residency from 1993-96 and a renal diseases and hypertension (nephrology) fellowship from 1996-99 at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston.
A staff nephrologist and chief of internal medicine at East Texas Medical Center, Carthage, from 1999-2002, Dossabhoy joined the faculty at the LSU Health Sciences Center, Shreveport, in 2003 as an assistant professor of medicine. While working his way up the ranks to associate professor in 2009 and professor in 2014, he served as director of the CME Activity Program for the Nephrology Section and was the education coordinator for the Nephrology Fellowship for 11 years. He was chief of the Nephrology Section at Overton Brooks VA Medical Center from 2006-19, where he was also the Nephrology Fellowship Site Program director and medical director of the Dialysis Program. He has served as a staff nephrologist at University Hospital, Shreveport. and at Willis Knighton Medical Center, Shreveport, for more than 16 years.
A fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the American Society of Nephrology, Dossabhoy has been an active member of the National Kidney Foundation, the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology and the Kidney Council of the American Heart Association. An invited reviewer for 14 medical and scientific journals, he is the author or coauthor of 20 refereed articles in indexed journals and of 45 abstracts and has given 29 invited lectures and presented 50 papers at scientific meetings and conferences nationally and internationally.
Dossabhoy has extensive experience in clinical research, which he has focused on hemodialysis, volume management, dialysis vascular access, kidney and pancreas transplantation, and anemia in chronic kidney disease. He has obtained more than $300,000 in grant support for research projects. His research expertise is especially relevant for Mississippi and UMMC. He has actively mentored medical students, residents and fellows in their research projects throughout his tenure at LSUHSC-Shreveport.
Amanda McCullough, M.S.N.
Amanda McCullough, a family nurse practitioner, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an instructor in nursing.
After receiving her B.S.N. from Villanova University, Pennsylvania, in 2005, McCullough served as a nurse at Greenwich Hospital, Yale New Haven Health System, Connecticut, while concurrently earning her M.S.N. at Quinnipiac University, Hamden, Connecticut, in 2010. She then came to Mississippi to serve as a staff nurse for Children’s of Mississippi and earned her F.N.P. certificate at UMMC in 2014. She served as a pediatric orthopaedic nurse practitioner for Children’s of Mississippi from 2014 until her transition into the School of Nursing.
A Sigma Theta Tau inductee, McCullough is an active member of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Practitioner Society and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She has given more than a dozen invited presentations at professional meetings or conferences and has participated in numerous quality improvement projects.
Alyssa Rose Nuzzo, M.S.
Alyssa Nuzzo, an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist, recently joined the Medical Center faculty as an instructor in the Department of Otolaryngology and Communicative Sciences.
After receiving her B.S. in communicative sciences and disorders from the University of Mississippi in 2014, Nuzzo earned her M.S. in speech, language and learning from Northwestern University in 2017.
Nuzzo completed a medical externship at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, where she gained experience in the inpatient and outpatient setting treating pediatrics with feeding and swallowing disorders. Nuzzo completed her clinical fellowship at Laskin Therapy Group in Ridgeland in 2018.
Nuzzo became full-time faculty at UMMC in February 2019 and currently provides outpatient speech and language therapy to the pediatric population. Her clinical expertise includes treatment of speech and language disorders, feeding and swallowing disorders and implementation of augmentative and alternative communication devices.
